When the seasons change and the weather turns cold, there’s nothing better to keep you warm than a knitted hat that you’ve stitched with your own two hands.

If you want to get started knitting a hat but you can’t find the right pattern or you simply don’t have the materials, a hat knitting kit is a fantastic way to get all of the supplies you need in one package.

To help you find the right kit for you, we’ve curated this list of the best hat knitting kits out there, including basic beanies, bobble hats, and more.

We’ve chosen the knitting kits in this list to offer you a wide variety of hat projects for women, and some men’s projects too. Each kit comes with a knitting pattern along with the yarn you’ll need to knit your own hat from scratch.

We’ve also listed the contents of each kit along with details of any additional accessories or needles you might need (including the knitting needle type or size).

Most of these kits only require knowledge of basic knit and purl stitches and a little bit of rudimentary shaping. For even easier kits, we recommend checking out our list of baby blanket knitting kits.

Is Knitting a Hat Hard?

Generally speaking, hats are some of the easiest projects to knit. Most hat patterns don’t need any fancy techniques – just use simple ribbing, knit and purl stitches, or stockinette stitches on circular or straight needles. Some patterns and kits might suggest double pointed needles, but these can be a little bit intimidating if you’ve just started.

Of course, different hat styles can vary in terms of difficulty. Beanies are the easiest type of hat to knit as they require the most basic skills, can be knit flat, and work up extremely fast – especially if you use super bulky yarn. Bucket hat knitting patterns with wide brims or unique shapes can be more difficult as they might require shaping or texturing.

If you’re a complete beginner, we suggest choosing a hat pattern or kit that uses straight needles to knit flat and then seam, as this is the easiest way to start. These patterns will typically take around 5 to 8 hours to finish in their entirety, which is much quicker than other garments. For an even easier project, check out our list of easy scarf knitting kits.

Of course, knitting a hat is much easier if you’re using a knitting kit. It’ll include all of the materials you need along with the pattern instructions, and sometimes some extras too.
